CAA Women's Lacrosse Weekly Awards - March 21

RICHMOND, Va. (March 21, 2022) – James Madison junior Isabella Peterson, James Madison senior Mairead Durkin, and William & Mary freshman Sam Van Gieson have been selected as the Colonial Athletic Association weekly award winners for women’s lacrosse.
 
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Isabella Peterson, James Madison
Junior | Attack | Sparks, Md. / Hereford
Peterson earns her second weekly award of 2022 after helping power James Madison to two wins over ranked opponents. The attacker from Maryland notched three goals and five draw controls in JMU’s win over No. 19 Richmond on Wednesday before collecting six goals and seven draws in Sunday’s victory at No. 14 Virginia. For the week, Peterson tallied nine goals, 12 draw controls, two ground balls, and a caused turnover as JMU climbed back up to No. 15 in this week’s ILWomen/IWLCA poll.
 
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Mairead Durkin, James Madison

Durkin continued her defensive impact for James Madison in wins over No. 19 Richmond and No. 14 Virginia to earn weekly honors for the first time this season. The defender from New York recorded a career-high five caused turnovers in JMU’s Wednesday victory over Richmond while adding four ground balls and followed by helping the Dukes to a win in Charlottesville on Sunday. Durkin ranks second nationally in caused turnovers per game (3.12) this season.
 
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Sam Van Gieson, William & Mary
Freshman | Attack | Severna Park, Md. / Severn School
Van Gieson is the third Tribe freshman to earn Rookie of the Week honors this spring thanks to an eight-goal week including a career performance in a W&M victory. The attacker from Maryland recorded three goals Wednesday against Coastal Carolina before erupting for five goals and an assist in the Tribe’s Saturday win at Campbell. Van Gieson joins Serena Jacobs and Ainsley Huizenga as W&M freshmen to earn rookie honors this season.
