Here are five things to know before the opening draw.
1. Stony Brook Is Battle-Tested
If there’s one word to describe Stony Brook’s schedule so far: loaded.
The Seawolves (3-1) are coming off a narrow setback to No. 4 Northwestern, but their résumé already includes:
- A dominant 16-5 win over UConn
- A statement 9-7 victory over ranked Colorado
- Another competitive showing against a Top-5 opponent
Against Colorado — ranked as high as No. 4 last week — Stony Brook showcased its defensive identity. Ava Yancey made seven saves, while the defense forced key turnovers late to secure the win.
This group has already proven it can hang with and beat elite competition.
2. Isabella Caporuscio Is Playing Like a National Player of the Year Candidate
The CAA Preseason Player of the Year is living up to the billing.
Junior midfielder Isabella Caporuscio earned CAA Offensive Player of the Week honors after a monster 15-point stretch (12 goals, 3 assists) in a 2-1 week.
Her recent stat line:
- 6 goals vs. UConn
- 4 points (3G, 1A) vs. Colorado
- 5 points (3G, 2A) vs. No. 4 Northwestern
And she’s impacting both ends of the field — adding 11 ground balls and eight caused turnovers during that stretch. Denver will have its hands full trying to slow down one of the nation’s most dynamic two-way midfielders.
3. The Seawolves’ Defense Is Setting the Tone
Stony Brook’s defensive pressure has been a difference-maker. Sophomore defender Hailey Huebner, the CAA Co-Defensive Player of the Week, totaled:
- 8 caused turnovers
- 5 ground balls
- 3 caused turnovers against both Colorado and Northwestern
Freshman Mirabella Altebrando (CAA Rookie of the Week) has also provided production from the midfield, tallying eight points (3G, 5A) in the 2-1 week. This balance — veteran star power plus rising young contributors — has Stony Brook playing fast, disruptive lacrosse.
4. Denver and Stony Brook Are Becoming Familiar Foes
Friday marks the third meeting in as many seasons between these programs.
Last year, Stony Brook handled Denver convincingly, earning a 17-8 victory in 2025. But this Pioneers squad enters ranked No. 19 and looking to flip the script on the road. Denver begins a two-game East Coast trip that also includes Fairfield, making this matchup critical to building momentum away from home.
With both programs consistently hovering in the national rankings, this interregional clash continues to grow into an early-season measuring stick game.
5. This Is Just the Beginning of Stony Brook’s Ranked Weekend
The gauntlet doesn’t stop on Friday.
After hosting Denver, Stony Brook heads to No. 9/13 Johns Hopkins on Sunday for another ranked showdown. It marks the fifth straight season the Seawolves and Blue Jays will meet, with SBU holding a 7-5 edge in the all-time series.
Despite the heavy nonconference tests, Stony Brook has been nearly untouchable in league play. Since joining the CAA in 2023, the Seawolves are 29-0 against conference opponents (regular season and postseason combined) and have captured three straight conference championships.
This weekend could define their national positioning heading into the heart of the spring.
What’s At Stake
- A Top-10 team defending home turf
- A ranked Denver squad seeking a résumé win
- National momentum before conference play heats up
- Two programs with legitimate postseason aspirations
- Expect intensity from the opening draw.
