Drexel Women's Basketball upset #1 Stony Brook to win the CAA Women's Basketball Championship! Here's what happened in the Finals.

Drexel Women's Basketball won the CAA Women's Basketball Championship with a 68-60 upset victory over No.1 Stony Brook on March 17. The win earned the Dragons their third CAA Tournament Title in program history and punched their ticket to the 2024 NCAA Women's Basketball  Tournament. 

Amaris Baker led Drexel in scoring for the fourth straight game, scoring a game high 19 points. Baker was also named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2024 Championship and will look to keep it rolling in the big dance. 

The No.7 seed Drexel led vs. No.1  Stony Brook from start to finish to claim their second CAA Championship under coach Amy Mollon, in addition to their 2021 title.

 Drexel Wins CAA Women's Basketball Championship 

Drexel (19-14) led for the entirety of the game vs. No.1 Stony Brook (27-4) for a major upset in the CAA Women's Basketball Championship. This marks the second consecutive year the No.7 seed has won four games straight to win it all.

The Dragons were hot shooting 50% from the field and 57% from the 3-point FG. In comparison Stony Brook shot 30% from the field and 22% from 3-point FG.

Amaris Baker, who was named Most Outstanding Player of the 2024 Championship, led the charge with a game high 19 points points and four three-pointers . Baker has led the Dragons in scoring over the past four contents peaking at the right time in March Madness. 

Brooke Mullin contributed 16 points and four three-pointers as well for Drexel. 

For Stony Brook the scoring combo of Gigi Gonzalez, who scored 18, and Khari Clark who scored 12 struggled to find consistency. The duo shot 0-6 from 3-point combined and shot 31% from FG. 

Drexel now has won two CAA Tournament Championships in the past four seasons, following their Title in 2021.

When Does The 2024 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament Start?

The tournament will begin with Selection Sunday on March 17, followed by the First Four on March 20-21. 

After the opening round is complete, the field will be set with the top 64 teams and the first round will start on March 22-23.

What Is Selection Sunday?

Selection Sunday is the day the NCAA committee releases the full tournament bracket initial seeding of all 68 teams. 

Thirty-two teams will automatically qualify for the tournament by winning their conference tournament. 

That leaves 36 other teams fighting for an at-large bid from the selection committee, which is considered through multiple stats and rankings to determine who receives the at-large bid.
