CAA Men's Basketball Tournament 2024 Predictions: Will Charleston Repeat?

CAA Men’s Basketball teams will compete for a CAA Conference title and an Automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on March 8-12 at the CAA Men’s Basketball Tournament 2024 in Washington D.C. Charleston Men's Basketball will have the opportunity to go back to back and defend their 2023 CAA Tournament Championship.

All 14 teams across the CAA will begin their preparation for March Madness on March 2nd at the conclusion of regular season play. Charleston still remains at the forefront of the CAA standings followed by a three-way tie for No.2 in the ranks.

College of Charleston won the CAA Men’s Basketball Tournament last year in 2023, in the championship game they defeated UNCW 63-58 with a comeback in the final minutes. The Cougars have been steamrolling through the CAA in February maintaining a seven game win-streak.

The Cougars last loss of the 2023-24 season was on Feb.1 to UNCW, the only program to beat them twice in CAA conference play. Charleston's momentum could carry them to making history in March Madness by winning consecutive CAA Tournament Titles.

The CAA Men’s Basketball Tournament 2024 is poised to bring intense matchups with Charleston at the No.1 seed and multiple programs trailing closely behind. Here’s a look at teams that make a run in the CAA Tournament.

CAA Men’s  Basketball Tournament 2024 Predictions

Here’s a look at some of the teams who could win the CAA Championship and make a run in March Madness.

College of Charleston (22-7,13-3)

Charleston Men’s Basketball are the reigning tournament champions after defeating UNCW in the Championship game to reach the NCAA for the sixth time in school history. The Cougars have been consistent all year and their recent winning streak in February has propelled them to the No.1 seed in the CAA standings. Last year, Charleston went on a similar run winning 20 straight games on their way to earning a NCAA Tournament berth.

Head Coach Pat Kelsey who has only been at the helm since 2021, has turned Charleston into a must-watch Mid- Major school in March. The Cougars have yet to escape the 1st round of the NCAA Tournament, last year they loss to #5 seed San Diego State 63-57. If Charleston repeats and wins the CAA Tournament they will be a potential Cinderella story going into the NCAA Tournament.

UNC Wilmington (20-8, 11-5)

UNCW is amongst the teams fighting for the No.2 seed in the CAA standings as the regular season ends. The Seahawks have been the runner ups two consecutive years for the CAA Tournament Title. In 2023 UNCW lost to Charleston 63-58 in the final and in 2022 they also came up short losing 59-55 to Delaware.

The Seahawks are in search of redemption and have shown signs of being a team that could make a run in March. Earlier this season UNCW beat Kenrucky 80-73 on the road, they are also the only team to beat Charleston twice in CAA conference play this year. UNCW has the highest scoring offense this season averaging 81.1 ppg led by Trazarien White.

Trazarien White is a name to know heading into March and has been leading the charge for UNCW all season. White is ranked 4th in CAA scoring averaging 20.0 ppg while shooting 50% from the field and 37% from 3-point FG. These are drastic improvements from his sophomore season in which he averaged 14.2 ppg and shot 28% from 3-point-FG.

White and graduate senior Shykeim Phillips, the 2nd leading scorer for the Seahawks, will have to continue producing at a high level in order for this team to make a tournament run.

Drexel (18-11, 11-5)

Drexel looks to return to the CAA Championship, as they fight for position in CAA standings amongst other top seeded teams. The Dragons most recent CAA Title came in 2021,the first in school history,  after defeating Elon 63-56 in the Final. After earning an Automatic berth to the NCAA tournament the Dragons lost 78-49 vs. Illinois in the first round.

This season Drexel has stamped itself as a top team in the CAA after starting CAA Conference play with a 7 game win streak in December, they also picked up a notable win against Villanova in preseason. Last season Drexel finished ranked 5th in the CAA and made a run to the second round of the CAA Tournament, where they ultimately lost to UNCW.

Head Coach Zach Spiker has done an impressive job turning Drexel back into a winning program with three consecutive winning seasons for the first time since 2005. WIth the right matchups from tournament seeding, this Drexel program could find itself back in the CAA Tournament Championship game.

Hofstra (18-11, 11-5)

Hofstra has been amongst the top of the CAA rankings this year behind the nation's third leading scorer in Tyler Thomas. Thomas leads the CAA in scoring averaging 22.4 ppg while shooting 42% from FG and 36% from 3-point FG. Junior guard Darlistone Dubar, who is listed at 6’8, has also contributed to this year's success for the Pride and is averaging 17.7 ppg.

Hofstra won their first CAA Tournament Title in 2020 after defeating Northeastern 70-61 in the Final. Unfortunately the Pride did not make it to the big dance as the 2020 NCAA Tournament was canceled due to COVID-19. Hofstra will look to qualify once again for the 2024 NCAA Tournament with hopes of hearing their name on Selection Sunday.

With two of the most effective scoring guards in the CAA and the highest 3-point-FG percentage in the conference at 37%, Hofstra is a team to keep eyes on in the CAA Tournament.
